The Oprah Winfrey show brought Hoodia into the homes of women all over the world. But what did the Oprah show really reveal? Learn the truth about this all natural weight loss supplement here.
Hoodia Gordonii has only been available in the market for a number of years, but its benefits have been known to a group of people in South Africa for generations. Called the San, these people living in the Kalahari Desert have used this for thousands of years not for weight loss but for survival in the harsh desert.
Since life in the desert can be hard because of the scarcity of resources, Hoodia helped the San suppress their appetite and thirst by easing the effects of the two. They found it especially helpful during long hunting trips where food isn't readily available. Aside from that, the plant which is also called xshoba was also used to treat indigestion and minor skin infections.
However, the wonders of this plant was revealed much later to the pharmaceutical world when the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research did a study on the bushmens' diet. During the course of the research they found out about the Hoodia's capacity to cause weight loss.
The results of the study were later licensed to the pharmaceutical company called Phytopharm. They conducted their own research, using it on obese people and got positive results on its weight-loss capability.
Pfizer, a big drug company, initially partnered with Phytopharm but eventually abandoned the project because they found pursuing it too costly.
Right now, what was discovered by the San of the Kalahari several millennia ago can now be used by ordinary people anywhere in the world. These people can take advantage of Hoodia in their hunting trips, not for wild animals, but this time for the elusive ideal weight.
